Showing Your Children Love at Valentine's Day
In early February, we begin the wait for love notes, Valentine cards, heart-shaped cookies, chocolate candies, and red roses. Of course, it’s nearly Valentine’s Day – the one day of the year set aside explicitly to express our affection for one another. Perhaps more valuable than chocolates and cards, though, is a healthy dose of what we all most genuinely desire: to feel valued and acknowledged, loved, understood, and seen.
Ideas to Show Your Kids Love
Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to show your children how much you love them and more specifically, what you love about them. Here are some ideas to consider:
· Boost their self-esteem by being curious about their thoughts and feelings. Example: “Looks like that hurt your feelings. Did I get that right?” Listen and let them explain – you will have built trust where they can express their thoughts. Validate: “I bet that was hurtful tell me more about it.”
· Identifying and validating feelings is a way your child can feel loved as they feel understood and seen.
· Talk about what specific qualities you love about them. Example: “I love when you show kindness to your brother.” “I see how much effort you put into your work; you don’t give up.” Through affirmations and heartfelt compliments, children recognize their unique qualities and strengths.
· Engaging in fun and creative activities together, such as making homemade cards or baking heart-shaped treats, can further strengthen your bond and create lasting memories.
· Another meaningful way to express your love is by spending quality one-on-one time with each child, allowing them to feel special, valued, while creating memories. This not only shows your interest in their lives but also encourages open communication and trust.
· Foster an environment where they feel safe to express themselves openly. This practice not only strengthens your bond but also teaches them the value of empathy and understanding in relationships.
This month, enjoy exploring how you show love with your family and enjoy all the candy!
