Anxious About Anxiety

When should we be anxious about anxiety?

We have all been there. A strange sensation that takes over our body. It could be that our stomach begins to hurt, or our heart rate is suddenly faster and sounds like a herd of galloping horses in our ears. It may be the sweat gathering at the base of our neck and running down our spine, or the sensation of our limbs paralyzed. Anxiety disorders are one of the more common mental health disorders that affect 4 out of every 100 people globally.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder, (GAD) is the most prevalent and the most frequently diagnosed of the anxiety disorders. Other anxiety disorders include, separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive -compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Females experience anxiety at a slightly higher rate than males. There is no definitive reason for this phenomenon, but research indicates brain chemistry, hormones and metacognitive beliefs- which differ in genders, may predispose an individual to greater levels of anxiety. Understanding the underlying cognitive processors and mechanics, may advance our general understanding of anxiety vulnerability. Adolescents affected by anxiety may be more tearful, aggressive, angry, or completely withdraw emotionally.

Teenagers and Anxiety

The teenage years are particularly challenging, and the social constructs today can idolize over-achievement and unhealthy competitiveness that in turn can become destructive. Seemingly benign panic attacks can quickly manifest into full blown anxiety if a teen does not have the resources to manage their feelings of dysregulation.

Thirty-one percent of teens are affected by anxiety. According to the clinical literature, this can impact school, social life, and self-efficacy negatively.  In addition, teens that experience high levels of anxiety are more likely to engage in risky behavior, such as substance abuse.  Most teens can handle the occasional case of anxiety. It is normal to be anxious and nervous about a big test or time trials in sports.
