PhD, Licensed Professional Counselor - Associate
Supervised by Jeri Kounce, LPC-S
Dr. Amber Rexilius is a Licensed Professional Counselor- Associate who has been working in the field of psychology for many years. She completed her education, a PhD in International Psychology and a Masters in Clinical Psychology, and life took her around the world living in 9 different countries. Employment in each location brought a different view and experience providing her a full understanding of how mental health affects all people.
As a counselor, Amber trusts the client is an expert in their own life. Her role through therapy is to offer a non-judgmental, supportive space to guide clients through their feelings and behaviors. She will focus on clients with complex social and/or familial dynamics, issues with self-esteem and self-worth, anxiety, perfectionism, parental frustration, and depression.
Amber’s Education and Experience
Her lifelong passion for psychology started at the age of 18 when she worked at a children’s residential treatment center. As she crossed borders, Amber worked to improve therapeutic services for youth and marginalized groups while providing individually therapy when able. Most recently, her efforts focused on facilitating NGOs in meeting the needs of homeless children in Argentina.
Amber has a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Permian Basin. She also holds a PhD in International Psychology, with an emphasis on trauma-focused interventions.
This past year, Amber relocated back to the US and her family settled in Houston. Her heart has continually pulled her toward working with adolescents and families which makes her a perfect fit for The Mind Spot.
Amber’s Clinical Approach
Amber is ready to combine her real world experience, her education and therapeutically scientific-based methods, to create a warm, judgement-free environment where the client’s true-self shines through.
Her experience as a mom of young twins has inspired the expansion of her focus to parents and providing them the support they deserve in a different way than before. Previously she understood they were an integral part of the family unit, but now she sees they too need a safe place for support and guidance as well. She provides parenting consultations and counseling, and when appropriate for a teen client, she will incorporate the family into the counseling sessions.
